Welcome to the official website of Stepping Stones Psychology,  a Nationwide & Worldwide Psychological Service based in United Kingdom.

Stepping Stones Psychology is a registered, private and independent clinical practice offering confidential psychological services in Sheffield,  South Yorkshire (England, United Kingdom). The clinic also delivers telephone and online psychological services both nationally and internationally. Stepping Stones Psychology offer Consultation, Couple Therapy, Family Therapy, Group Therapy, Adult Therapy and Child Therapy – whereas the latter two will be delivered in form of Individual Therapy. The vision of Stepping Stones Psychology is on promoting the emotional health and well-being of the local community and general public to their full potentials.

My name is Sharmi, I am the Principal Psychologist, Founder and Clinical Director of Stepping Stones Psychology. I am a psychologist and integrative practitioner with over 10 years’ experience of working within the mental health field. I am also a Trauma and Attachment Specialist. I will be providing a safe place where you can explore any difficulties you may be experiencing and where I will place high value on a strong and supportive therapeutic relationship.

I am a psychologist trained to doctorate level which is the highest level within the profession. As a scientist-practitioner, my clinical training involved a strong foundation of research and scientific practice. This means that I place a great emphasis on psychological theories and recent scientific research; I am dedicated to using evidence-based practices to help you identify your strengths and move through difficult times.

I am trained within the discipline of Counselling Psychology which means that my practice of psychology will be grounded in humanistic values and that my role includes being a reflective practitioner. This involves working with your frame of reference – seeing the challenges from your perspective and adapting treatment to your needs. This means that I work as both a reflective and integrative practitioner.

Talking things through with a professional can often help bring some clarity at a time when you are struggling to make sense of how you are feeling. Spending this time to stop and reflect can offer new understandings and paths to move forward, enabling a deeper understanding and acceptance of yourself. Stepping Stones Psychology in Sheffield could help you with this.

I have clinical experiences of working within National Health Services (NHS) and private practice; I have worked with clients with a wide range of complex mental health concerns on both a long and short term basis. I enjoy working with all age groups; I am both experienced and qualified to work with adults, children, adolescents and families.

I  work to guidelines laid down under the British Psychological Society (BPS), National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and The Health Care Professions Council (HCPC). This means that you can be assured  in the knowledge that the psychological service you receive from Stepping Stones Psychology in Sheffield will be delivered by a Psychologist who works within strict ethical codes that promote excellence.

I am aware that admitting to a problem and reaching out by seeking professional help can be difficult and requires strength and courage. Talking to someone about our difficulties, our deepest fears, our worries or distress, can generally be a daunting experience, and it is understandably more unnerving when it is with a complete stranger. In order to alleviate some of your apprehensions I have shared a little about myself under the section “About me”. This section also provides information about my qualifications and clinical experiences, and is further expanded under the section where I talk about my approach as a psychologist and my values. This is found under “Philosophy”.

When seeking professional help in the form of therapy, clients often wonder what takes place in a session: You might have a specific therapeutic approach in mind that you would like to avoid; or you may have a preference for a particular method. You might find it helpful to read about the therapeutic approaches I use in Stepping Stones Psychology, which can be viewed by clicking on “Approaches”.

SPECIALIST FAMILY THERAPY SERVICES

Stepping Stones Psychology in Sheffield offer Specialist Family Therapy Services which are aimed at parents, children, teenagers and families. Information about the Specialist Family Therapy Services can be found under “Services”. I have provided further details about the therapeutic approaches I use when working with this particular client group. These can be viewed by clicking on “Approaches”.

PSYCHOLOGIST VERSUS COUNSELLOR

Although my clinical training was within the discipline of Counselling Psychology this does not mean that I am a counsellor delivering counselling. I am a psychologist offering psychological treatment in form of consultation and therapy in my practice, Stepping Stones Psychology. Although,  counsellors and psychologists are both mental health professionals and their work overlap each other they are generally different. Especially in terms of training as it is a professional requirement for all psychologists to be trained to doctorate level ; this include 7-10 years of formal training and studying psychology in depth with the aim at understanding, treating and preventing a wide range of mental disorders, emotional and mental health concerns. This is in addition to the completion of an independent doctoral research and clinical training via various placements in hospitals and private practices. This means that you can be assured  in the knowledge that the psychological service you receive from Stepping Stones Psychology in Sheffield will be delivered by a Psychologist who has many years of and a broad range of clinical experiences and in-depth scientific knowledge in the field of Psychology.
